Frequently asked questions
About Movie Night, the Discord bot for group movie nights.
What is Movie Night?
Movie Night (movienight.gg) is a free Discord bot and web dashboard for groups that watch movies together. Groups log the movies they watch, rate them from 1 to 10, take turns picking, vote on what to watch next, and see stats about everyone's taste.
Is Movie Night free?
Yes. Logging movies, ratings, picking, polls, stats and Letterboxd import are free. Rin, the AI movie critic, is free for a limited number of requests per group while it is in beta.
How do I add Movie Night to my Discord server?
Use the Add to Discord button on movienight.gg, choose your server and approve the bot. You will be signed in and taken through a short setup. Then log your first movie with /add-movie. Groups that do not use Discord can sign in with email, create a group on the website and invite members by email or with a share link.
How does Movie Night decide whose turn it is to pick?
Movie Night keeps a picker rotation, and /next-pick shows whose turn it is. Admins set the order with /set-picking-order or on the dashboard. The current picker, or an admin, can use /skip-picker when they cannot make it, and the skipped person gets their turn back later. Set your weekly movie night and a reminder channel, and the bot pings the next picker ahead of time.
Can our group vote on what to watch?
/poll posts movie cards and a native Discord poll. Choices can come from the wishlists members have shared with the group, your own wishlist, or a list of movies you type in. Wishlist polls show four movies the group has not watched yet; type your own list for up to 10 choices.
Does Movie Night work with Letterboxd?
Yes. On the web dashboard you can upload the CSV files from your Letterboxd export (ratings, watched, diary, reviews or likes), review the matches, and add them to your personal movie history. Imported history stays personal: it does not change your group's movies, ratings or picks.
What stats does Movie Night show?
Group averages, top-rated movies, leaderboards, the harshest and most generous raters, how similar members' tastes are, and how each person's picks have rated over time. Stats are available on the web dashboard and through Discord commands such as /stats, /leaderboards and /rating-chart.
How many people can use it?
Movie Night is built for groups that watch together regularly, from a few friends to a few dozen active members. If you run a larger community, tell us in the support Discord so we can help.
Does Movie Night track TV shows?
No. Movie Night tracks movies only.
Can I try it before adding it to my server?
Yes. There is a sample dashboard with example data, so you can look around without signing in.
